“Alligator Alcatraz” was planned in secret. Built in secret. Operated in secret.
Now, Friends of the Everglades is taking action to uncover the truth.
On October 14, we filed a new lawsuit against the state of Florida to obtain public records and shine a light on the agencies and decision-makers behind this secretive project that has caused irreparable harm to the Everglades.
Why this matters: A federal lawsuit filed on June 27 by Friends of the Everglades, Center for Biological Diversity and joined by the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians aims to halt activity at the site so an environmental impact analysis can be completed, as mandated by federal law. Contrary to evidence presented during a four-day hearing in August, the state and federal defendants have repeatedly tried to deny the clear role of the federal government, therefore arguing the project didn’t have to comply with federal law. They have failed to produce public records sought by Friends of the Everglades related to federal support at Alligator Alcatraz. On October 2, news broke that FEMA awarded the state $608 million for costs related to the Everglades detention center, further strengthening our already strong legal case.
Obtaining these public records will provide evidence crucial to our case and expose the full scope of this reckless prison and the federal government’s role in it. Friends of the Everglades is standing up for environmental law and order — it’s that simple.
The Everglades belong to everyone — and the public has a right to know what’s happening to them. As this case unfolds, we’ll continue to demand accountability and defend the principle that government officials answer to the public.
