Calling all students! Apply now for the Karen Mashburn Environmental Scholars Program scholarship and internship

Friends of the Everglades is pleased to launch the second year of our Karen Mashburn Environmental Scholars Program scholarship and internship. Our 2023 recipient Autumn Bryan (featured in the video left) participated in class presentations with Young Friends of the Everglades, contributed to our blog, and helped develop Everglades Learning Library Kits - deployed to public libraries in 3 counties. This fall, one undergraduate or graduate recipient will be awarded $10,000 and participate in a 14-week internship at Friends of the Everglades in Stuart, Florida, for 15 hours per week. During her time as a Friends of the Everglades intern, Autumn provided invaluable contributions to our Young Friends program, which included her leadership in the launch of our new Library Learning Kits. The Library Learning Kits, available in Martin, Palm Beach, and Broward County libraries, include Marjory Saves the Everglades by Sandra Neil Wallace, animal figures, and lessons for children. They are made all the more inspiring with the addition of original poetry by Autumn. Young Friends intern looks to the Everglades as an educator

What can we learn from life in the Everglades? By Autumn N. Bryan 2023 Karen Mashburn Environmental Scholar Upon accepting my internship with Friends of the Everglades, I began to consider the prospect of the Everglades as an educator. I have so much to learn from the people here, and even more to unearth from the beautiful River of Grass that connects us.  Marjory Stoneman Douglas knew, though academically-educated, that school is not the only place you can find a teacher. All around you are opportunities for priceless lessons. For those that can recognize the beauty of the swamp, the Everglades are the perfect educator.
