As a signer of the Rescue the River of Grass petition, you’ve added your voice to the call for Florida to buy land south of Lake Okeechobee to store, clean and move more water south. Now, two new stories are bringing that vision into the spotlight — and underscoring why this moment matters.

The Science
Inside Climate News: ‘Crown Jewel’ of Everglades Restoration Is Too Small, Report Says

We’ve been saying it for years — the shrunken-down Everglades Agricultural Area Reservoir is
too small to deliver all the clean water the Everglades needs at theright times, in the right quantities. And the consequences extend beyond the Everglades. A scientific report prepared by Dr. Tom Van Lent establishes the need for substantially more storage south of Lake Okeechobee in the EAA to restore natural water flows, reduce harmful discharges, protect drinking water for millions of Floridians and prepare south Florida for rising seas, higher temperatures and other future climate-related pressures. Florida needs to think bigger to finish the job of Everglades restoration — and state funding is available to get the job done.

The Solution
Florida Bulldog: ‘Rescue the River of Grass’ campaign calls on Florida to buy 100,000+ acres of Big Sugar’s land
Florida voters approved the money to buy land for Everglades restoration in 2014, and it’s time the state used it. Florida has a dedicated land-acquisition fund and a shrinking window of opportunity to acquire the land needed to advance Everglades restoration. Florida Bulldog spotlights the solution called for in the Rescue the River of Grass campaign — and the growing public support — to buy more than 100,000 acres of land south of Lake Okeechobee to store and clean water for the Everglades.
