Congress must reject 20-year-old water promises to protect future of Lake Okeechobee, estuaries & Everglades

The following letter was sent by Friends of the Everglades to all Florida congressional offices requesting their rejection of the intentionally manipulative language additions that would ultimately prioritize the water supply needs for large industrial farms south of Lake Okeechobee over the health of residents living along toxic-algae plagued waterways. April 29, 2020 To the members of Florida's congressional delegation: On behalf of Friends of the Everglades, I’m writing to voice our concerns about an effort to manipulate this year’s Water Resources & Development Act (WRDA) in a manner that would be detrimental to the Everglades, the northern estuaries and Florida Bay. In an email sent Tuesday, April 28, Rep. Alcee Hastings’ staff requested other representatives sign onto a letter [...]

#GivingTuesdayNow is One Week From Today!

Virtual advocacy is working! The success of our first Clean Water Conversation last week is proof that no matter the changes happening in the world as a result of the coronavirus, people still care about protecting Florida’s most precious resources. We are exactly one week away from #GivingTuesdayNow. The 24-hour giving event, happening May 5th, is a global day of giving inspired by the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19. This is your chance to support important efforts to educate the public and protect our waterways despite all distractions. Will you help us expand our virtual efforts by making a donation on May 5th during #GivingTuesdayNow? Your generosity will support the growth of our newly relaunched Young Friends of the Everglades [...]

Earth Day Reflections

Friends, I’m writing you this Earth Day from my back patio, where I’m savoring the gift of a breezy late-spring afternoon. I hope you’re able to safely enjoy the outdoors today, too. Even if you’re stuck indoors during this period of quarantine, we can offer a few ways to honor the planet on this 50th anniversary of Earth Day: Help protect the endangered Key deer by signing our petition. When you’re done, share the petition and our Young Friends of the Everglades learning materials with the students in your life. Get educated about Lake Okeechobee by reading our Earth Day guest column published in The Palm Beach Post, Sun Sentinel, The News-Press, The Daytona Beach News-Journal and TCPalm. The Invading [...]

Important Advocacy Powered by #GivingTuesdayNow Support During Covid-19

The coronavirus pandemic has disrupted our lives, but it has not diminished our spirit of advocacy.  During the past month, our staff has been working remotely to deliver two new programs that will help empower environmental advocacy in the era of COVID-19. The first is the new Young Friends of the Everglades, a virtual learning hub for students that’s designed to inspire action among the youngest environmentalists. Students can sign a petition to protect the Key deer and learn about Everglades ecology through this free virtual program. The second is a virtual outreach initiative to ensure Lake Okeechobee is managed in the interest of human health, not polluters. It’s essential that we raise our collective voices on the federal government’s [...]

Introducing a new, virtual-learning hub for Young Friends of the Everglades

Dear Friends of the Everglades, Today would have been the 130th birthday of our founder, Marjory Stoneman Douglas. Everything we do at Friends of the Everglades is driven by Marjory’s legacy of advocacy, and it’s our honor to mark this Everglades Day with some good news we believe she would be proud of. Today we are re-launching our Young Friends of the Everglades program, which has been reimagined as a virtual education portal for students. The new Young Friends program is devoted to teaching students about advocacy, starting with a campaign to keep the Key deer’s protected status under the Endangered Species Act. On the new Young Friends of the Everglades section of our website, you will find: Among the [...]

The ruling clearly is the death knell for the planned 14-mile, 6-lane toll road. The sole justification for the tollway - that it would improve congestion - was flatly rejected based on the evidence. Therefore, we [...]
