Ignoring overwhelming outcry from Floridians, the Palm Beach County Commission approved the permit for the Southland rock mine Thursday evening. We will remember the commissioners who voted yes on this dangerous proposal: Commissioners Marino, Baxter, Flores, Powell, Weiss and Woodward.
The rock mine is being sold by Big Sugar as a “water resources” project so that they can further boost their bottom line, all while failing to prove ANY meaningful benefit to the Everglades.
While yesterday was a step in the wrong direction, this isn’t the end of the fight against this project. Stay tuned because we will need you to speak up again soon!
Yesterday’s events are also proof that Friends of the Everglades’ work to acquire and restore land in the Everglades Agricultural Area is desperately needed. The polluters aren’t waiting. Now is the time for us to act, too.
If you’re as frustrated about the Southland vote result as we are, please join our Rescue the River of Grass campaign by signing our petition calling on Florida’s leaders to act now to purchase land in the EAA for Everglades restoration:
