In 2002, the Board of Directors of Friends of the Everglades authorized the establishment of two perpetual Trusts to fund the continuation of Marjory Stoneman Douglas's lifetime of work to protect and restore the Everglades ecosystem.

In order to acomplish this goal the Board established an created an Educational Trust and a Legal Defense Trust. Each Trust is authorized to accept Charter Donations from businesses and individuals until they are considered funded at $5 million dollars.

The charter donor base for each Trust shall thereafter be closed and all revenues generated by the Trust shall fund the activities authorized by the Trust. Each Trust shall continue to accept donations until they reach a cap of $25 million dollars.

All Trust donors are asked to participate in the direction of the Trust by nomination and confirmation of Trustees and helping to ensure the success of the Trust goals.
