"Save the Everglades" Film, featuring Juanita Greene and John Childe

In March 2009, Abdullah Helwani and his film crew from Full Sail University, created the Saving the Everglades film for Friends of the Everglades as an effort to inform the public about the current state of the Everglades and to create a fundraising opportunity. Conservation Chair Juanita Greene and Environmental Attorney John Childe from Friends of the Everglades are featured in the film.

Friends of the Everglades 41st Annual Meeting: April 11, 2010

Friends of the Everglades held its Annual Meeting on April 11th, at the Garden Room at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. Members and guests enjoyed a presentation by Matthew Schwartz, who spoke on pressing issues in Big Cypress National Preserve. Honoree Shannon Estenoz was presented with the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Defender of the Everglades Award for her years-long work as a South Florida convervationist.

South Florida Living Green Fair: November 14th and 15th, 2009

Friends of the Everglades has been invited to be a partner with other environmental groups for the 'South Florida Living Green Fair' on November 14th and 15th. This will be quite an event with an expected attendance of 10,000 people over the two days. Water conservation programs will be given to children by board member, Connie Washburn each day-representing Young Friends of the Everglades and Friends. Help spread the word and join us for this fun filled family event.

Critical Ecology Excursion Series in the Everglades: May 2009

Saturdays in May 2009 Friends of the Everglades offered a new and exciting program in May 2009. Critical Ecology is the scientific and social understanding of "the home" during a critical period to influence your family, friends, neighbors and even strangers to respect and protect the natural environment. The sites visited included Big Cypress for a Cypress hike, Everglades National Park for a bicycle ride, Crandon Park for a sea grass exploration and Key Largo for a reef snorkel.
Our special thanks to Jennifer Roberts and the McDanel Fund for their donation in support of our first Critical Ecology program, as well as Cindy Adams from The Reef Roamer for their attention and support.

Gourmet for the Glades: June 4th, 2009

On Thursday, June 4th, 2009, Friends of the Everglades held its Gourmet for the Glades at the restaurant Ortanique on the Mile (Add a link to the Ortanique on the Mile & to our links page). Gourmet for the Glades is a friend and fundraising benefit for the continued protection of the Everglades. This benefit gives South Florida residents and restaurateurs the opportunity to creatively contribute to an exceptional cause. Ortanique on the Mile in Coral Gables offered a $65 special meal on Thursday, June 4th, and donated 50% of the proceeds to the Friends of the Everglades. The price included a glass of house wine, a three course meal, tax and gratuity. Stay tuned for future Gourmet for the Glades events!

Ken Burns' National Parks film series: May 5th, 2009

On Tuesday, May 5th, 2009 the University of Miami welcomed Ken Burns to present his National Parks film series. Juanita Greene, Friends of the Everglades Vice President was one of the key highlighted people in the "making of the film."
