Acquisition of Florida Power and Light Company Lands in the East Everglades Expansion Area
Dear Friend of Everglades National Park:
The Florida Power and Light Hearing for the transmission lines will be held on the 19th of February in the Club Stadium at Florida International University. It is an important hearing and the more environmentalists the better. Without significant environmental presence at this meeting, power lines could very well end up going thru Everglades National Park.
The Acquisition of Florida Power & Light Company Land in the East Everglades Expansion Area Draft Environmental Impact Statement is available for your review and comment. The Draft addresses options for National Park Service acquisition of FPL land in the Everglades to facilitate hydrologic and ecologic restoration of Everglades National Park.
Sierra Club is advocating for the following options and anyone attending the meeting should voice their support for these particulars:
Alternative #2: Acquire the land by purchase, condemnation or donation.
If Alternative #2 cannot be accomplished by the National Park Service, we would then support alternative #5 which is to acquire the flowage easement by purchase, condemnation or donation.
Of Note: Sierra Club does not support nuclear expansion at Turkey Point nor do we support a new transmission corridor.
